Film for snacks and confectionery

Two packs sit in this aisle and they want different films: a clear confectionery wrap that has to keep the product visible, and a snack or nut pack that has to keep light out. Both run at speed, so the seal and the crimp decide as much as the barrier does.

What the pack has to do

The requirement changes with the product, not with the machine. A biscuit and a chocolate both run on a flow wrapper and still need different materials.

Light is the requirement that most often decides between a clear and a metallized film. It is a design choice, not a barrier value on the grade sheet.
Product Requirement On the grade sheet
Chocolate, confectionery Moisture and aroma, with the product visible WVTR · OTR
Biscuits, crackers, bakery Moisture in, oxygen out, print on the outer web WVTR · OTR
Nuts, dried fruit Oxygen and light, both of which turn the oil OTR · light metered by the film choice
Snack bars, high-speed flow wrap Seal strength and crimp on a fast line Seal face · wetting tension

Which grade to start from

Clear confectionery wrap starts from AlOx-coated BOPP; a snack pack that must keep light out starts from metallized PE. The polymer stream decides the first step.

ALOX BOPP-A printing grade
18 µm OTR ≤ 1, typ. 0.63 · WVTR ≤ 1, typ. 0.89
ALOX BOPP-B lamination grade
18 µm OTR ≤ 2, typ. 1.29 · WVTR ≤ 2, typ. 1.32
VMCPE seal layer
40 µm standard WVTR 2.1 · OTR ≤ 80
VMNCPE barrier core
40–100 µm per order · WVTR ≤ 1 · OTR ≤ 1

Print grade or lamination grade

A confectionery wrap that carries the print starts from ALOX BOPP-A: the protective coating over the oxide is what makes the AlOx face printable, and its wetting tension is specified at ≥ 38 mN/m. A structure where the barrier film stays inside the laminate starts from B, which is specified for lamination only.

A is specified tighter on barrier: OTR ≤ 1 and WVTR ≤ 1 against ≤ 2 for B. If the job prints on the barrier web, use A; if the ink sits on a separate outer web, B is the cheaper answer.

When metallized PE is the right call

Nuts, dried fruit and snack packs that need light out of the equation start from metallized PE instead. A clear oxide layer does not meter light the way a metal layer does; the grade sheet says which one you are buying.

Seal, crimp and line speed

On a flow wrapper the film spends more time in the crimp than in the barrier. Seal strength, the seal window and the wetting tension of the treated face are the three values to check before the trial, and the trial is where the line speed is confirmed.

Structures converters run

Starting points, quoted against the converting process you actually run. The trial decides the gauge and the seal window.

Pack Typical structure Grade in the structure What it buys
Chocolate, twist or flow wrap AlOx-BOPP / PP sealant ALOX BOPP-A Clear barrier with the product still visible
Biscuits, crackers, bakery PP / AlOx-BOPP / PP ALOX BOPP-A Moisture and oxygen barrier, print on the outer web
Nuts, dried fruit, VFFS PE / VMNCPE / VMCPE VMNCPE core · VMCPE seal Light, oxygen and moisture barrier in one polymer stream
Snack bar, high-speed flow wrap Metallized PE / PE VMPE sealant Heat-sealable metallized web for a fast crimp
A different polymer stream is a different structure. If the pack has to be PE, start from Metallized PE; if it has to be PP, start from ALOX BOPP.

Other application notes: coffee packaging · documentation and samples · AlOx or metallized.

Questions before the trial

If the answer you need is not here, ask it directly — technical questions get an engineer's reply, not a brochure.

Which grade for a clear confectionery wrap?

ALOX BOPP-A at 18 µm: it is the printing grade, with a protective coating over the oxide and a wetting tension specified at ≥ 38 mN/m. OTR ≤ 1 (typical 0.63) and WVTR ≤ 1 (typical 0.89).

Can AlOx BOPP replace a metallized film in a snack pack?

Only where the pack wanted a clear film, or a PP structure. If the requirement is maximum light barrier in a PE structure, metallized PE is the grade to trial instead.

What is the difference between BOPP-A and BOPP-B?

The protective coating. A carries it and is specified for printing as well as lamination; B has none and is specified for lamination only. Both are 18 µm.

Does the film run on a high-speed flow wrapper?

That is what the trial establishes. Seal strength, the seal window and the wetting tension of the treated face are the values to check first; the trial confirms them at your line speed.

What is the minimum order?

One roll of ALOX film, one pallet of metallized PE. A4 sheets are free, and a sample roll ships with its dimension sheet and lot data.
